ABOUT

First, I'm a born and raised Midwesterner, so let me start with: Welcome!
This website is a blend of my personal and professional life. I know that typically sites like these embrace only a professional perspective, but my professional life is largely informed by personal life and experiences. Without both, I feel it's impossible to understand either.
I'm a PhD student, researcher, statistician/methodologist, blogger, amateur photographer, wannabe world traveler, queer person/advocate, and cat caregiver to Orion and Stata.

My name is Finn and I identify as a Queer Non-Binary Dyke Lesbian (they/them). My blog is focused heavily on my personal experience navigating a PhD while holding those identities and also coming from a non-traditional background. My path to PhD-land has been an interesting one for sure and it's place I never really thought about landing.
My PhD work (and research) is centered on Queer Relationships and Sexual Health. I am working on understanding how queer people engage in romantic relationships that are often fraught trauma and a lack of relationship models to learn from. I come at this research from a strengths-based perspective and refuse to categorize queer relationships (or queer sex) as inherently risky. Contrarily, there is much strength, communication, and consent standards in queer relationships that the world of sexual health can learn from.

I'm also a passionate statistician and methodologist. I teach statistics and frequently run trainings and workshops on various statistical methods. My favorite stats program is Stata (did you notice I named my cat after it?) and am quite giddy with any chance I'm given to teach or train people in statistics and methodology.
As a researcher, student, and advocate, we are tasked with honoring the most intimate thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and desires of the people we serve. We hold an ethical and moral obligation to our participants to conduct the most beneficial and accurate research. This is a core belief of mine and is what helps fuel my passion to learning and teaching all statistical and methodological techniques available to us.
