Research & Teaching
I view myself as a servant for the populations I work with; research is the skill set I have that allows me to best serve these populations. My research ethos is rooted in a belief that I am not here to do research simply for the sake of doing research, but here to do it because it's impactful and meaningful to contributing to allowing those most marginalized in our society to live their happiest, most fulfilling lives. My aim is to utilize research as a way to center the voices of those who society has decentralized.
My research interests focus almost exclusively on queer populations and include examining a variety of interpersonal relationships and how those relationships ultimately impact health. All of these interactions are complex social systems imbued with multifaceted, dynamic processes that support and hinder personal development for queer people, often simultaneously. Specifically, my research examines:
- Romantic and dating relationships
- The relationship with the self
- Family systems
- Homelessness and interactions with service providers (including shelter employees and government agents)
- Religiosity and various religious institutions, especially trends on conversion techniques
- Health and healthcare provider interactions
- Intersections of sexual and gender identity
- Gender identity development and transition-related experiences
